Separate each player's buildings and connections from the shared special markers when choosing Catan upgrades. Our Ancient Civilizations and Special Tokens listings cover those two groups independently.
Four or six civilizations?
The Ancient Civilizations set offers four-civilization and six-civilization configurations. Each civilization contains four cities, five settlements, 15 roads and 15 ships: 39 pieces. The totals are 156 pieces for four civilizations or 234 for six.
Choose With Box to add one matching box per civilization: four or six additional pieces respectively. The civilizations have distinct visual themes; these are replacement player pieces, not extra civilizations with new abilities or rules.
Why are ships included in a base configuration?
Each civilization's accessory group includes roads and ships. Ships are relevant to games using Seafarers; their presence in the pack does not mean the Seafarers expansion comes with it. Likewise, six sets of pieces do not supply the boards, cards or rules needed for a 5–6 player game.
Special markers are a separate set
The Special Tokens listing offers three selections:
- Core: one Robber, one Largest Army and one Longest Road marker.
- Expansion: one Pirate, one Harbormaster, one Merchant and one Metropolis marker.
- Complete: all seven special pieces.
The civilizations set excludes these markers, and the special set excludes player buildings, roads and ships. Complete means the seven listed markers; it is not a replacement for every component needed by every expansion.
Choose for the edition and scenarios you own
Start with four player groups for your four-colour setup, or compare six if you use the relevant extensions. Then select only the special markers you want. The listings identify Catan compatibility, but this guide does not establish fit with every edition, custom board or storage insert.
A community post showing assorted Catan upgrades illustrates how players mix component categories; it is not a test of our products. These are unofficial DeluxyGames accessories. The game and expansions are sold separately.
